United Airlines is set to launch nonstop service from San Francisco to Johannesburg on United Express. This will be United 1 and will be the first time that the airline has had nonstop service to South Africa.
Passengers can now enjoy nonstop service to Johannesburg from United’s New York hub. United is also the first US airline to offer nonstop service to South Africa’s capital city from Newark, New Jersey.
United Airlines’ recent announcement that they will be launching a nonstop service to Johannesburg, South Africa, has been applauded by the tourism industry, and not just because it will open up international travel to a country that has a long history of sport and tourism. The company’s decision to extend its service to South Africa comes at a time when the industry is facing unprecedented growth in the country, and as the country’s economy continues to expand, we expect to see more airlines offer nonstop service to major cities like Johannesburg.

In June, South African Tourism (SAT) and United Airlines celebrated the launch of a new daily non-stop flight between New York/Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Johannesburg O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB). The new flight departs Newark daily at 8:45 p.m. and arrives in South Africa at 5:45 p.m. the next day. With the addition of this new route, United now offers more flights to South Africa than any other U.S. airline. Yesterday’s event at Newark Liberty Airport included a performance of the traditional Indlamu dance by Zulu dancers, dressed in traditional garb and accompanied by live drumming.
Special guests at the ceremony were Dr. Motumisi Tawana, consul general of South Africa, Jerry Mpufane, president of the North American Tourism Centre of South Africa, and Tom Kozlowski, director of international network planning for United Airlines. The new flights between Newark and Johannesburg will be operated on the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which features 48 United Polaris business-class seats, 88 United Economy Plus seats and 116 United Economy seats. South Africa reopened to tourism in November 2024, with a requirement that foreign travelers provide proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test performed no more than 72 hours prior to arrival.
