Where to stay in Napa
The city of Napa is located in the southern part of the Napa Valley. Napa is less than 50 miles from downtown San Francisco and can be reached in about an hour under normal traffic conditions. Napa is known for its historic architecture. Downtown Napa is in the midst of a renaissance and has many tasting rooms within walking distance, as well as excellent restaurants and shops. Just south of Napa is the Los Carneros region. Its proximity to the city of San Francisco and the San Francisco Bay Area make it an attractive place to live in the Napa Valley. Of course, you have to drive if you want to explore the middle or upper valley, but when we stayed at Los Carneros, we didn’t find the road too taxing. Come during the low traffic months to alleviate traffic problems on Highway 29, or take advantage of the Silverado Trail and drive during the low traffic hours of the day.
One of the benefits of living in Los Carneros is that the charming town of Sonoma is just a short drive away if you have the time and inclination to explore it. There are also some excellent wineries in the area, including Domaine Carneros, where you can sample sparkling wine.
